Microbiologic influenced corrosion (MIC)
Although corrosion is an electrochemical process, it is in 30 – 50 percent of the cases caused or accelerated by microbiological activities. In this case we speak of biocorrosion. This form of corrosion causes corrosion problems in often unexpected places and is developing 10-100 times faster than ‘normal’ corrosion. It is therefore not surprising that biocorrosion is seen as one of the biggest enemies for the maintenance of pipelines and storage tanks. Bioclear specializes in diagnosing and designing strategies to prevent and control biocorrosion.
Examples of microorganisms which have an impact on the corrosion process:
- Sulfate reducing bacteria
- Sulfur oxidising bacteria
- Iron reducing bacteria
- Iron oxidising bacteria
- Methane-producing microorganisms
Often the help of Bioclear is only invoked when the damage has already occurred. But when it comes to biocorrosion prevention is better than cure. Because once biocorrosion is present, it is very difficult to get rid of 100% again. Furthermore, avoiding it is a lot cheaper than the repair or replacement of affected components.

Thanks to the development of a practical method in which the risks of biocorrosion are monitored, the risk of damage can be controlled. With preventive measures a timely intervention can be organised at the moment that the threat is relevant.
